Vintage Grass Vine Market Basket Hand Woven
Rare, hand woven and hand tied small market basket with braided handle. Hold this up to the light and you can see how this was made (see photo close-ups): splines of split bamboo tied together, and then grass or vine was attached and secured.
This lovely piece will not hold much weight, but it is decorative enough to earn it the right to simply set and be admired.
Back in the 1970s, my Mom and sister Kate (the one with the bulging attic today) opened and ran a retail green plant and gift shop. When it closed in 1980, my sister Kate hung on to many of their unsold wares. We’ll be adding baskets all the time here on KatesChockfullAttic.
DIMENSIONS: (See tea light next to basket in Photo #2) 10″ long x 7 1/2″ wide x 4 3/4″ deep; 8 3/4′ tall including handle
CONDITION: This feels fragile, which is why I warned about not overloading it. It isn’t broken or pulling apart anywhere, but it is woven of dried grass, and it “sheds” even when it’s quietly sitting on a shelf. Make sure that you love it enough to embrace this characteristic as chippy charm, and not a drawback.
